Tellicherry's
educational history has many specialties. There was a tradition of Sanskrit
teaching in Tellicherry until the beginning of 20th Century. Later due
to the introduction of Western Educational system by Christian Missionaries
other systems declined. The first school started by the Christian Missionaries
was B.G.M. School by Basal German Mission on March 1st 1856 with 74
students, this school is later known as B.E.M.P. High School. Tellicherry
is indebted to the services rendered by Edward Brennen and Herman Gundert
in the betterment of Educational System.
At
present, there are total 45 schools in Tellicherry Municipality, of
which 10 are High Schools, 11 Upper Primary and 24 Lower Primary.
There
is only one Higher Education Institute in Tellicherry Municipality,
i.e. Government Training College, however there are three colleges within
the limites of Tellicherry Educational District, they are Government
Brennen College, Govt. Pazhassi Raja College, Mattannur, and Nirmalagiri
College, Kuthuparamba.
